Charles Darwin, the English naturalist, said in a letter to Henry Fawcett in 1861, “All observation must be for or against some views if it is to be of any service!”
So let’s look at the hullabaloo over the appointment of the President-General of Oron Union,Chief (Mrs) Janet Amba as the Senior Special Assistant to His Excellency, Governor Udom Emmanuel on Small and Medium Scale Entrepreneurship(SMEs) with that Darwin’s statement in mind.
One school of thought in Oro Nation, especially social media users (particularly Oro youths) views the appointment of Mrs Amba by Governor Emmanuel as a “misnomer” because of her position as the President-General of Oron Union.
They have taken to social media to express their “displeasure.” The Social media have been boiling like a pot on a stove since Saturday, October 19, 2019 when the appointment was made official. Some are for, while some are against.
The first school of thought which I prefer to christen “Group-one people” are condemning Governor Emmanuel for “desecrating” the revered office of Oron Union PG with the appointment, calling for the immediate resignation of Janet Amba as the Oron Union PG or rejection of the appointment.
The second school of thought I refer to as “Group-two people” are applauding the Governor for the appointment and congratulating Mrs Amba for the appointment which they described as well deserved.
In the midst of this controversy, let’s look at the fact and conjecture as far as this appointment is concerned.
The fact is that there is no section of the Constitution of Oron Union that prohibits its President-General from accepting any political appointment.
The Constitution of Oron Union 1996 (as amended in December,2011) Article VII 18 (ii) describes the President General as the Chief Spokesperson of Oro Nation in all dealings and engagements with external persons or institutions.
Please, does this provision translate to the President General not accepting political appointments? Where do “Group-one people” derive their power of telling Mrs Amba to relinquish her position as Oron Union PG before venturing into her political office! That is the conjecture.
Conventionally, even if she was to relinquish her position as the President General of Oron Union because of this appointment, it has to be during the Annual General Meeting (AGM/Conference) of the body constitutionally held in December of every year at Oro Civic Centre, Oron Town.Good enough, dates for the 2019 AGM/Conference has been released. It will hold on December 27-29, 2019.
The AGM/Conference is the supreme authority of the Union responsible for approval of policies and consideration of matters as well as sanction of any officer, member or branch of the Union who is in breach of the Union’s Constitution.
Group-one people should
exercise patience till December 2019 and stop crying foul on the social media platforms though, they are free to hold opinions, for opinions are a part of living. My admonition is that they should try not to cherish opinions for her to reject the appointment or resign her position as the PG of Oron Union.
Mrs Amba made history in December 31, 2017 in Oro ethnic nationality to be the first woman to be elected the President General of the 94-year old Oron Union. And by December 31, 2019 she will complete her eventful tenure of two years and bow out meritoriously to another service of her fatherland as SSA to His Excellency, the Governor.
A gold fish, they say, has no hiding place. That is why it is not surprising that this great leader of our time having distinguished herself in office as Oron Union PG, Governor Emmanuel found her worthy to join his administration in rendering purpose-driven service to the State in particular and humanity as a whole.
It will be pluasible that the people of Oro have a rethink on this matter and look beyond her activities on the Oron Union. Good enough in less than two month, this history making and golden lady from Oron will bring her eventful tenure to an end.
It is the expectation of all that as it is generally accepted, One Good Turns Deserves Another.
Who knows this is not a way of rewarding her selfless and impactful services during her tenure.
One would want to keep growing, Governor Emmanuel thinks Mrs Janet Amba should be on side in driving his Completion Agenda as it concerns the growth and development of small and medium scale businesses.
Let’s be optimistic.
