*Tasks them on building a robust Union

In a bid to fully kick-start the implementation of his blueprint for a new NUJ anchored on collective leadership approach, the Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, Comrade Amos Etuk,Thursday, 10th October 2019, inaugurated strategic standing committees to help drive the vision of repositioning the Union.
Addressing Journalists at the NUJ Press Center, Uyo, Comrade Etuk said the inauguration of the committees was in fulfilment of his promise during the campaigns to build a vibrant and effective union “where every member of the Union, not only feel a strong sense of belonging but actually sees himself as a vital part of the Union’s leadership .
Etuk who congratulated the selected members on their appointments, expressed optimism that they would justify the confidence reposed in them by the Union and urged them to contribute their best to expand the frontiers of the Union and the profession.
“I appeal to you all to see your nomination as a call to duty; an invitation to use your experiences, talents and skills to bring about a new NUJ in our State. We are in this journey together, a journey we have undertaken to uplift our Union to a height where we shall be proud of what we have and protect the nobility of this important profession”, the NUJ Chairman enjoined.
He also charged members of the committee to use their contact and every resources they have to ensure that all the uncompleted projects dotting the landscape of the NUJ Press Center are completed.
Etuk further used the opportunity to reiterate his administration’s avowed commitment in pursuing the welfare of members with vigour.
Etuk who said he was poised elevating the image of the Union to an enviable position, said his administration would continue to work assiduously in making Akwa Ibom State Council of the Union a reference point and “standard by which other state councils in Nigeria are judged”.
“We are committed to training and manpower development to ensure a return to core professional journalism in the State. The health of our members is important to us and we shall continue to engage the government to expand the health insurance scheme for journalists in the State”, the NUJ Chairman assured.
Giving a vote of thanks at the ceremony, the Vice Chairman of NUJ, Akwa Ibom State Council, Comrade Nene Albert thanked Comrade Amos Etuk for opening the umbrella of the Union to all members and making members to understand that NUJ belongs to them.
She also saluted the objectivity brought in to bare in the selection process, adding that membership of each committee reflect the area of expertise and passion of those so selected.
The Vice Chairman who spoke on behalf of other committee chairmen pledged the readiness of the committees to deliver on their assigned mandates to make both the Chairman and the Union proud.
The inaugurated committees and their chairmen are as follow: Press Center Management Committee – Comrade David Augustine, Sports Committee – Comrade Solomon Bassey, Building Committee – Comrade Nene Albert, Ethics and Disciplinary Committee, Welfare Committee – Comrade Edem Okon, Health Committee – Comrade Uduak Ekong, Chaplaincy, Research and Documentation Committee – Comrade Cletus Ukpong, and Special Duties Committee – Comrade Samuel Charles.
Also inaugurated was an Ad-hoc committee to plan the 2019 NUJ Press Week. The committee is headed by Comrade Nsibiet John.
