Africa’s greatest resource is her youthful population through which (with active and full participation) Africa can surmount the difficulties that lie ahead. We must therefore tap into & nurture such ingenious acts permeates simply because there is tremendous potential in the untapped African youths. Our energy must come from the youths.
In recognition of the importance of youth participation and involvement in the development of the African continent, the African Union Commission in her wisdom to providing a way forward to the development of African youth developed a policy framework in the form of the Youth Charter. This policy prescribes responsibilities to Member States for the development of young people, especially in the areas of inclusion and capacity building. The Youth Charter was adopted by the Heads of States at the Banjul Summit (July 2006), Gambia. The Youth Charter offers a framework which emphasizes the rights, duties and freedom of youths to governance, Civil Societies and International Partnership. Thus, the birth of Africa Youth Union Commission.
The main objective of the Commission is to ; organize all young people in Africa and Diaspora for the promotion of African unity and development through the linkage of youths and youth structures; and the mobilization of resources (human, technical, technological and financial) to support the works of Youth structures and Youth Division of the African Union Commission in their quest for effective service delivery and advocacy activities to engage young people in driving Agenda 2063 and it’s thematic impact to communities.
Thus, AYUC is that mainstream platform that not only unifies voices of African youths, but also serves as a centre for mobilising, recognising, legitimising, harmonising, utilising and prioritising the voice and actions of African youths in the integrated development of Africa.
AYUC is a continental platform which mainstreams young people into the work of the African Union Commission at all levels; supporting and advocating for an enabling environment that facilitates the active participation and influence of young people in decision-making processes, and the consideration of youth-specific needs in all policy areas. African youths will play a big role in how the continent responds and efficiently tackle challenges as well as progressively transform the continent.
With African youth comes innovation, energy and optimism to be delivered by AYUC, creating a supportive environment, platforms and opportunities. As African youths, we must position ourselves as citizens with rights and responsibilities and profoundly change the mode of interactions we have with all actors. Achieving this, African youths must rally round their mainstreaming platform where young capable and inspiring African leaders can take up responsibilities, strengthen cooperation, speak up and promote youth voices in the context of African development, especially with reference towards the drives to the realization of Agenda 2063 and other benchmark protocols. There are various platforms to achieving this in Africa, however, none is as viable as the African Youth Union Commission.
African Youths…. our voices have values, our actions tremendous effects and if we don’t use them, of what essence is the value and effect. The African Union Commission needs us to help drive it’s various thematic Agenda, and the AUC in his magnanimity seeks to work with various Youth Groups in the actualization of a continental framework for community driven impact. It is time to put our voices and actions to use. Join hands with AYUC, let’s ensure a brighter rewarding future for Africa.
This is my humble Submission and Best regards,
African Youth Union Commission (AYUC)
