It has been falsely alleged that these are not the best times for the Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio as many Nigerians are demanding for thorough investigation into his eight years tenure as Governor of Akwa Ibom State.
The latest is the immediate past member representing Oron Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Robinson Uwak, who is set to launch a massive campaign for the arrest and prosecution of Akpabio.
Hon. Uwak, in a piece titled “Is there a man more corrupt in our Nation than Godswill Akpabio? No not one” on his Facebook page said that the anti- corruption war of President Muhammadu Buhari must start with Godswill Akpabio.
“Not a case of stealing deserves to be tried in our nation if the gargantuan, monumental and cold-hearted stealing of Akwa Ibom state resources (meant for the good of the ordinary citizens of Akwa Ibom State and Nigerians in general) by Godswill Akpabio and his family is not tried and concluded.
“What happened to the several cases of killings, kidnapping and bloodshed of the very people who trusted the Akpabios with governance. The time to ask questions is now”.
The former Federal lawmaker further revealed that he will launch a campaign “COALITION FOR THE ARREST AND PROSECUTION OF GODSWILL AKPABIO” on Friday, September 23, 2016, urging the people to be ready to sign up for the campaign.
Apparently unsettled by Uwak’s proposed campaign, reliable source disclosed that some top politicians from the Annang extraction hired some ‘baby’ lawyers to publicly declare their support for Akpabio and defuse the earlier tension caused by Uwak.
The lawmakers under the aegis of Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District Lawyers Coalition, last Monday held a press conference at the Abak Independence Hall where they strongly condemned what they called “media attacks and nume petitions against the senate Minority leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio.
Speaking, the leader of the group, Barr. Patrick Umoh said that the group has observed with utter dismay the recent publications by online media practitioners and local tabloids against the Senate Minority Leader, adding that the group will rise in defence of the ex governor.
“Consequently, the Akwa Ibom North- West Senatorial District Lawyers Coalition has resolved to rise defence of a man of honour whose identity as a lawyer remains unassailable. We hereby undertake pro bono to explore legal resources and avenues availability against any persons, group of persons; organisations or their privies who delight in attacking the image of our representatives at the Senate”.
Shortly after the news of the press conference went viral, the people of Akwa Ibom descended on the lawyers by strongly condemning their action, saying that the group made mockery of the legal profession by attempting to shield a man who ruled the state with impunity.
Apparently, in a bit to express their displeasure towards the actions of the lawyers, some Akwa Ibom people labelled them unruly names like “baby lawyers”, “charge and bail”, “hungry lawyers” and many others, saying that it is the height of sycophancy and hypocrisy for lawyers to offer pro bono services to a corrupt man while there are many helpless poor people in need of such help.
“It is disheartening that few “Lawyers” converged today at the Abak Independence Hall where they resolved to henceforth offer pro-bono (free) legal services to Chief Senator Dr. Godswill Akpabio whenever anyone “attacks, insults, castigates” (etc.) him in the media. This is one of the consequences of recession… Economic and mental recession”, one angry Akwa Ibomite wrote.
Another person wrote; “A bunch of fellows by the name “Akwa Ibom North West Senatorial District Lawyers Coalition” addressing a press conference at the Abak Independence Hall against, hear the joke- “The recent media attack and numerous petitions against Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio”.
“When their St Akpabio went after Ime Umanah, the Annang lawyers were not born then. When he stole our common patrimony, they saw nothing wrong. When he killed, maimed and raped his opponents, Annang lawyers were on sabbatical. When Ukpanah was killed, Annnag had no lawyers, abi?
“When he used state security apparatus against his fellow Annang kinsmen, there were no lawyers then. God is watching us in this state and will reward us all accordingly.”
Meanwhile, a reliable source has revealed that the lawyers are currently fighting dirty over the N20m given to them by Senator Akpabio. According to the source, the money which was sent to the group through Prince Akpabio, has caused serious disharmony among the group members.
The source further revealed that most of the lawyers at the event are boys who were raised by Prince Akpabio while others were law students hired from the University of Uyo, saying that no lawyer worth his salt would have stooped so low to take part in that “show of shame”.
In another shocking revelation, the source, who is also a member of the group, revealed that the ‘main’ sponsors of the press conference mandated them to glorify Senator Godswill Akpabio and hail him as the best governor Akwa Ibom will ever have in order to belittle Governor Udom Emmanuel.
